Welcome to the DM FileManager™

Overview:
DutchMonkey.com (DM) FileManager is an online file management tool designed to behave much like the tools you use on your computer to work with files every day. DM FileManager allows you to create and edit files, upload files into folders, create photo albums, and more. Below, you will find an overview of these features. This help file can be accessed by clicking the button near the upper right of the DM FileManager screen.

Browser Support:
DM FileManager requires the latest browsers in order to work properly: Firefox 2, Safari 2, and Internet Explorer 7. If you don't have one of these browsers, you will still be able to use the FileManager but it may not work properly. Click here for your browser details. Email questions or problems to development@dutchmonkey.com.

General Behavior
The DM FileManager lets you browse folders and perform actions within the folders. The left side of the screen always shows the current folder contents, while the right side give you a list of tools you can use within the folder. This list of tools changes based on the contents of the current folder, but some items remain the same: "Jump To", "Make Folder", "New File", "Edit New File", "Search", and "Upload File(s) to [Current Folder]". Click a folder to move into that folder and display it's contents. When you click a folder, that folder will become the new "current" folder. If you are inside a folder (i.e. you are no longer at the topmost folder) you will also see a tool at the top of the list of tools called "Up to [Folder]". This tool will take you up one level to the folder just above the current folder.

As a guest, you may browse public directories, but you must log in to access most of these features. The log in menu is available at the bottom right of the DM FileManager screen.
Click this to move up one level to the folder which contains the current folder.
The "Jump To" drop down list lets you jump to any top-level folder that you have access to. Just choose the folder from the list and you will navigate to that folder.
Create a new folder in the current folder. If you are using Internet Explorer 7, you may see a security alert indicating, "This website is using a scriptded window to ask you for information. If you trust this website, click here to allow scripted windows...". You should feel free to allow scripted windows for DM FileManager; the dialog prompting this alert simply asks you to input a name for the directory.
Create a new file in the current folder. Click "Edit New File" to open the DM RichText editor to edit a new file. When the editor opens, it will prompt you for a filename. The editor allows editing similar to MS Word for editing HTML files. More information is available on editing files in the Edit description under the Context Menus section.
Search the current directory and all directories beneath it for a search term. This will search files for any match of the search term in folder names, file names, and file contents.
This allows you to upload files to the current directory. Click browse to open the browse dialog. This allows you to select mulitple files as once. Shift-click to select a range of files, or Control-Click individual files to select individual files. Click "Open" on the browse dialog to start uploading files to the current folder. You will see the list of files waiting to upload (this is called the file queue). The current file will show it's upload progress; files will turn black when they are finished uploading, and will also appear in the folder listing on the left. Click the "x" next to the filename to cancel an upload, or click "Cancel All" to cancel all the files waiting to upload. Canceled files will display with a line through the filename. Once all files are either done uploading or canceled, the button "Cancel All" will change to "Clear Files". Click this button to clear the files from the upload queue.
Context Menus
The DM FileManager has many functions available via context menus accessible by right-clicking (one-button Apple mouse users: control-click to access these menus). The context menus change based on where you click, or what file type you click on. Right-click on a file or folder to access tools and options for the specific item; right click on other areas of the DM FileManager screen to access a generic menu. There are sub-menus accessible through the "Tools" menu. Many of these tools are self-explanatory, but some require an explanation.

Copy, Cut, and Paste allow you to copy, cut, and paste files and folders within the DM FileManager. Keep in mind that this does not allow you to copy and paste files directly to your hard-drive - it only allows you to copy and past within the DM FileManager itself.
Zip/Unzip allow you to zip and unzip folders or files. Unzip supports most compression types, including tar, Z, Zip, and gz.
Download files directly to your computer.
Choose this option to display a direct link to a file. Copy and paste the link into an email, IM conversation, web browser, or any other place where you want to link directly to the file.
Edit text-based files online. HTML files will open in the DM RichText editor which behaves much like MS Word, allowing you to format your document much like you normally would. Other documents will open in the DM Code Editor, which is a simple editor much like Notepad or TextEdit. Once you are in the editor, you can switch between the two by clicking the link in the upper right of the editor window - "Switch to [Code/RichText] Editor". Any file may be edited in either editor; however, if you save a file from the RichText editor, the file will be saved with a .html extension.
DM PhotoAlbums™ and DM MediaAlbums™
Any folder that contains images or supported audio/video types (any media type supported by Quicktime) will show a tool to "View DM PhotoAlbum™" and/or "View DM MediaAlbum™". Click these tools to view the all the photos or movies in that directory.
DM PhotoAlbums™ is a feature-rich photo album tool that allows you to build a photo album including captions and basic image editing. Upload photos for a photo album into a folder and click "View DM PhotoAlbum™". Once the photo album loads, you will be able use DM PhotoAlbums™ to give the album a title and add captions to photos. This information is stored in a file called "browse.cap" in the folder containing the photos. (Deleting browse.cap will delete your photo album title and captions.) Once you are done, you can share the URL for the photo album with friends and family. Only logged-in users with write access to your photo album directory can add/edit captions, so your photo album is safe.
DM MediaPlayer™ is media player which can play most media files including Quicktime, Mp3, Flash, and Windows Media files. Click the "View in DM MediaPlayer™" link or an individual file to easily view and share your media files online.
